Apparently, javelin runs in the Boisseau family’s blood.
Rye senior Rocklan Boisseau broke his own school record with a throw of 182 feet, 1 inch in the first javelin meet of the season, April 16 at Hendrick Hudson.
Last season, Boisseau broke the Rye High School record that was held by his older brother, Dalton, who now throws javelin at Indiana University. The 2023 Rye graduate currently holds the seventh-best throw in Hoosier history.
If that wasn’t enough a family history, the Boisseaus’ late grandfather, Dr. Victor Hurtig Jr., also threw javelin at Kansas State University.
Rocklan wasn’t the only senior to receive honors in the opening stretch of the outdoor track and field season. The Garnets hosted a Pentathlon Challenge on April 9, and Rye Neck senior Kyle Snow finished first on the boys side, while Rye senior Erin Ball finished second for the girls.
Ball was also presented an Outstanding Field Athlete Award at the event, an exclusive honor given to just one high school field event athlete, as voted on by officials of New York Section 1.
“It’s an honor to have someone from our program receive it,” said Rye coach Bryan Johnson, “as it exemplifies someone who’s not just a standout athlete but who embodies sportsmanship, respect for the officials and athletes, and so much of what we want our athletes to aspire to beyond hitting their marks.”
Ball got the chance to showcase her versatility in the pentathlon event, which includes a combination of 100/110 hurdles, shot put, long jump, high jump, and 800/1500. Ball’s sophomore teammate Eleanor Pandl shined as well, placing seventh. Rye senior Aidan Schmidt finished sixth for the boys.
RYE NECK’S PANTHER PALOOZA – Rye senior Henry O’Rorke excelled in cold, wet conditions on April 5, finishing seventh in the 100-meter and fourth in discus. Other Garnet standouts were sophomore Fiona Marino (fifth in 3,000-meter) and senior Parker Canna (sixth in shot put).
HARRISON’S FULTON INVITATIONAL – Before showing his strength in the field, Boisseau medaled on the track as well. The senior finished fourth in the 100-meter event on April 4, just behind junior teammate Reid Thigpen, who took third. Senior Justin McCarthy paced the Rye sprinters with a second-place finish in the 200 and a third-place finish in the 400.
Junior Ben Truman won the boys 800-meter event, and senior Claire Curran took second in the girls 800. In the field, senior Kate Schatz took first in the triple jump, and senior Sabrina Pereira placed second in discus.
Other PRs at the meet were junior Lily Oberbannscheidt in the 1,500, sophomore Riho Fukudome in the 100-meter hurdles, and Calvin Holler in shot put.
