A severed electrical service line in the driveway of 65 Rye Road caused a blaze on the residential street on March 12, officials reported.
The Rye Fire Department responded to the home after an automatic fire alarm, and upon determining its cause, called Con Edison for backup. Officials observed smoke billowing from the property and an active fire in the garage, according to the department.
While some fire personnel worked to extinguish the blaze, others conducted a search of the house. They found two dogs, which they removed safely from the fenced-in backyard, the fire department said.
“The fire was brought under control swiftly, and crews contained it to the garage, preventing further damage to the property,” the Rye Fire Department said in its statement. “Firefighters also checked for any fire extension above the area of origin and successfully vented the structure to ensure no hidden flames remained.”
The fire is similar to two others this winter.
In January officials responded to 20 Loder St. and found the home’s dining room ablaze and emitting heavy smoke. And in December 2024, the department worked to extinguish a blaze at 2 Lane Way that had made its way through the cottage’s vaulted ceiling. Both of those fires were electrical in nature.
The Westchester County Cause and Origin Team determined the Wednesday fire at 65 Rye Road was related to the failure of electrical equipment within and around the main electrical panel.
The Rye Fire Department also emphasized how critical working fire alarms are.
“The prompt alert to the fire department played a significant role in achieving such a favorable outcome,” the department said.
