The Rye boys soccer team scored twice in the first 20 minutes Wednesday at Somers and never looked back.
Three more goals after halftime put the game comfortably out of reach for the home Tuskers, as the Garnets rolled to a 5-1 win and a 9-0 record on the season.
First-half goals were scored by senior captain Kasen Scarperi and sophomore Connor Dehmer. Scarperi’s came off a cross from junior Harrison Zimmer, while Dehmer’s was courtesy of a dish from senior Gabe Chared-Sandstrom.
Senior Filip Glitterstam had two second-half goals, and junior Sam Collins scored Rye’s final goal.
Senior captain Pete Wilmot will take this one and move on.
“It definitely helped us having that cushion of the two early goals,” the midfielder said. “Somers was unable to finish a couple of good first-half chances, and we played composed soccer for most of the game. In the second half, we were able to put the game to bed.”
With a number of Rye players out sick, and the Garnets still waiting for some key players to return from injury, Wilmot knows winning when his team isn’t at full strength is encouraging.
“Any win feels good, but It feels like half our team is sick this week,” he said. “We’re down a few guys right now, but we play on. Games like this give us confidence that we can overcome adversity. With each win, our team grows stronger.”
Rye will try for a 10th straight win to start the season Friday at Edgemont (4-3).
