Mrs. Aronson’s sixth-grade American Sign Language class is a very busy group. In addition to learning the language, they are taking action to ensure that the world is a more accommodating place for the deaf.
Last fall, they wrote letters to the heads of all the U.S.-based airlines, asking them to provide means of communications for deaf passengers. More recently, they hosted members of the Rye Police Department for basic signing lessons, so that each officer can engage on a basic level with a deaf citizen. The officers were diligent students, but just in case, they were each sent back to the station with “cheat sheets” to keep in their cars.
