Rye residents’ reactions to the latest blizzard are a wintry mix.
While some have proclaimed themselves “done” with this prolonged season of snow, others are loving the opportunity to cozy up indoors or go sledding.
“I’m exhausted, but it’s a good workout,” Rye resident Blake McGowan told Rye Record photographer Alison Rodilosso while shoveling Monday. “Snow problem!”
With 15 inches of snowfall in the past 24 hours, some Department of Public Works employees came to work at 6 a.m. Sunday, then alternated eight-hour shifts, with four-hour breaks in between. Some workers are sleeping at the Rye Recreation Center, where cots have been set up for them, along with food and drinks.
“The city of Rye has been preparing for the storm for a number of days,” Public Safety Commissioner Michael Kopy told Rodilosso. “We really appreciate all of the Rye residents staying at home so we can clear the roads. We believe our streets are in better shape than our neighboring communities.”
The snow is expected to cease for the immediate future before another 1 to 2 inches falls Wednesday and Thursday.
