Adele Marie Riedel, 91, passed away on Jan. 26 surrounded by family. A resident of Rye for 50 years, Adele was known for her love of the arts and heartfelt support of people and the environment.

Born to Clarence and Marie Ellenbecker in Frankfort, Wis., Adele was the third of 13 children. She studied fine art at the University of Illinois – Champagne/Urbana and remained a visual artist throughout her life.

Adele married Ed Riedel on July 9, 1955. In 1964, they moved to Rye and raised four children, all of whom graduated from Rye High School.

A lifelong community activist, she volunteered at the Carver Center, Rye Nature Center, Rye Art Center, and the Girl Scouts. She helped start the recycling program in Rye and participated in the annual cleaning of Blind Brook. Her commitment to these and other social justice issues continues to inspire her children and grandchildren to do good works.

Adele was a costumer and producer for Rye Summer Theatre, created set pieces for the renowned Limón Dance Company and costumes for the SUNY Purchase production of The Nutcracker. Her passion for art was infectious and influenced the career trajectories of her children and several grandchildren.

Adele was known for her warmth, patience, and unconditional love. Her door was always open and her hospitality extended to all. (Many RHS thespians will remember the numerous cast parties Adele and Ed hosted.)

Adele was preceded in death by Ed in 2015. She is survived by her four children: Lesa, Steven (Catherine), Tina (Dale), and Jonathan (Rhonda); five grandchildren: Joseph, Christopher, Emily, Edgar, and Eliza; and three siblings: Floyd, Joyce, and David.

A memorial visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 9 at the Harrison Funeral Home at 329 Halstead Avenue, Harrison, New York 10528. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the ACLU memorial fund, with acknowledgements sent to adeleriedel04@gmail.com.
