All homeowners currently receiving the Basic STAR property tax exemption are required to re-register with New York State on-line by December 31 in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014. The NYS Department of Taxation and Finance will be mailing letters to Basic STAR recipients the first week in October with instructions on how to register on-line.
Basic STAR is available for owner-occupied, primary residences where the resident owners’ and their spouses’ income is less than $500,000; it exempts the first $30,000 of the full value of a home from school taxes.
Property owners currently receiving an Enhanced STAR exemption or an Aged exemption do not have to re-register.
