Rye’s indoor track and field team got off to a strong start at the North Shore Season Opener, with eight athletes setting personal records.
The Garnets’ top finisher in the Dec. 6 meet was freshman Tino MacKinnon, who took second in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 4:42.26, just six seconds away from a first-place finish in his first indoor high school competition. He also finished 11th in the 1,000-meter race (2:57.51), the only freshman in the event’s top 30.
Other top finishers for Rye were junior Ben Truman, who was fourth in the 600-meter race (1:28.78), and senior Sophia Bubeck, who finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (9.69).
Two athletes logged multiple PRs at The Armory in New York City: senior Riley McCarthy (1,000-meter run and shot put) and junior Aidan Walker (300-meter race and 55-meter hurdles).
Seniors Sabrina Pereira and Adian Schmidt set new bests in the 55-meter dash. Other PRs for Rye were Anna Kearney (sixth in pole vault), Alex Schatz (sixth in triple jump), and Calvin Holler in shot put.
Rye juniors Claire Curran and Lily Oberbannscheidt both finished in the top 10 of the 1,000-meter race. Iciar Garate and Alessia MacKinnon took ninth and 10th, respectively, in the triple jump.
