Caitlin Hogan, a senior at School of the Holy Child, has been named a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Chosen on the basis of high scores on the Preliminary SAT, she is among the roughly 15,000 Finalists competing for approximately 8,300 National Merit Scholarship awards that will be announced in April.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Caitlin,” said Joanna “JB” Broda, director of college counseling at Holy Child. “National Merit recognition reflects Caitlin’s hard work, as well as her commitment to academic excellence.”
To become a finalist, a student must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance. The student and a school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s self-descriptive essay and information about the semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school and community activities.
Since entering Holy Child as a fifth grader, Hogan has taken advantage of every opportunity the school affords. She has honed her skills as an athlete, participated in service trips to New Orleans, and organized the Holy Child team for the annual Polar Plunge in support of the Special Olympics. She is active in school theatre productions, involved with running the Gryphon Film Festival, and is a contributor to the school newspaper and literary magazine.
A consistent Honor Roll student, Hogan’s current course load includes AP English Literature, American Government and Politics, Advanced Physics, Economics, Advanced Spanish, Modern American Women, Creative Writing, and Religion. She completed five AP courses last year, including AP Calculus BC, and this year is enrolled in both Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations through Holy Child’s consortium membership with the Online School for Girls.
