Three Rye 16-year-olds were arrested for allegedly shooting people with a high capacity, high velocity water bead blaster, according to Rye police.
Cops responded to Forest and Oakland Beach avenues at around 8:40 p.m. on Sept. 2 after complaints of teen boys shooting pedestrians out of a white SUV with bead blasters.
Two victims were allegedly shot at and filed police reports, the department said, but neither required further medical attention.
After investigating, Rye police identified the three suspects and arrested them on Sept. 6 on charges of reckless endangerment in the second degree, a misdemeanor. Cops determined the shootings were random and not targeted.
The NERF Pro Gelfire guns used in the attacks come with little gel beads users hydrate with water before shooting. The guns are also equipped with a magazine attached, which NERF calls a hopper, that hold the hydrated beads as ammunition.
Some of NERF guns come with upwards of 10,000 rounds of gelfire beads and range in price from about $20 to nearly $70.
The product also comes with a fairly extensive warning label, according to Police Lt. Michael Anfuso. Some of the warnings state that users should always wear eye protection and follow local laws — including making sure they’re allowed at all.
“If your child has one please follow the warnings that come from the manufacture,” Anfuso said.

Because the suspects are underage, cops didn’t identify them by name. They were all issued family court summonses because of their ages, and due in court Thursday morning.
The arrests follow the booking of another local teenager who threatened to shoot up the Rye YMCA in August.
The 15-year-old in that incident was charged on Aug. 9 with making a threat of mass harm, a class B misdemeanor, and transferred to Westchester County Family Court in White Plains.
