The RHS girls tennis team stretched its unbeaten streak to four on September 14 while hosting rival Harrison. All of Rye’s singles players won to defeat the Huskies, dropping Harrison’s season record to 2-2.
Senior tri-captain Ali Sims, a first singles player, defeated her opponent 6-6-1. But Sims said the score didn’t reflect the quality of the match, calling her opponent “really consistent.”
Harrison Coach Sam Fishman said, “Every point was like a war between the two players.”
Alanna Morque, playing in the No. 2 singles spot for the Garnets, won 7-5, 6-1.
Morque called the first set “really close,” but that she “took over” in the second set. “I needed to feel my opponent out to see what kind of a player she was. Once I figured her out, I was able to dominate.”
Senior tri-captain Emma Jennings, playing third singles, won in a close match, 6-4, 6-3.
The first doubles team, comprised of senior tri-captain Paola Peraza and Chloe Jennings, lost 6-2, 6-2. Peraza and Jennings agreed they had “a really bad day.” They started to gain momentum in the last game of the first set, but couldn’t maintain it.
RHS’ second doubles players, Farah Keuleers and Caley Carlisle, are the only undefeated Garnets. They won 6-0, 6-3.
In third doubles, Momo Yoshida and Kirsten McHugh lost 6-2, 6-3; in fourth doubles, Jessica Gardner and Amelia Kauftiel, lost in a super tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-3, and 8-10.
Thrilled with the results so far, RHS Coach Tony Campbell said he’s in awe of his players, who continue to win, despite losing so many stars from last year’s team.
Campbell credited junior varsity Coach Quan Huynh, a former tennis pro, with the team’s continued success. Huyn coached Harrison JV’s boys and girls last year.
