If you’re an early morning person, you’ve seen a Department of Public Works truck making frequent stops along Purchase Street to water the hanging baskets of geraniums. Now that the floral displays are coming down, the Ceres Garden Club of Rye wants to thank the DPW crew who faithfully watered, fertilized, and kept them looking so wonderful.
The Ceres Club, which has planted and donated the flower baskets for many years, dedicated the 2012 displays to Marian Shea, a longtime member who passed away in the spring. Marian and her late husband Jim were greatly valued for the important service they gave to many Rye organizations and causes.
The club funds the hanging baskets through its annual sale of holiday wreaths and baskets of greenery. The group particularly wishes to thank the merchants of Rye who significantly add to the sale’s proceeds by buying wreaths for display on their storefronts. This year, the sale will take place on the Square House porch on Saturday, December 1. Club members will also be happy to take pre-orders and will make deliveries to homes and businesses. Watch for further details about the sale.
The Ceres Garden Club meets at the Rye Nature Center the second Thursday afternoon of each month for talks and tips about horticulture and floral arranging, group flower shows, and to plan the hanging basket and other civic projects undertaken each year. Anyone interested in joining the Club is invited to attend the monthly meetings. Men, as well as women, are welcome into the group. Contact Meg Stackpole at cstackpole@aol.com for more information.
