Thanks to Rye Officer, These Dogs Had Their Day

Early one October Sunday morning, a driver stopped near the I-95 South ramp off Playland Parkway after noticing two dogs – apparently abandoned – sitting on the island as vehicles whizzed by.

dogscyrRye Police Officer Angie Cyr was dispatched to the scene, and upon her arrival, the pooches happily wagged their tails and approached the avid dog lover. She marveled at their kind dispositions. Mistreated as they were – bone thin with open sores – they did not act aggressively or defensively, and appeared to be mother-and-son pit bull mixes. Officer Cyr put the dogs on makeshift leashes to prevent a hazardous road situation and, lacking identification, contacted the New Rochelle Humane Society as per protocol.

dogdorothyShelter staffer Tiffany Monterola arrived and rescued the duo, who were exhausted and covered in burns, possibly suffered from being locked in the trunk of a car. NRHS named the dogs Dorothy and George Burns in light of their condition, although they healed beautifully while safe and sound at the shelter.

The dogs are now available for adoption, and listed individually at NewRochelleHumaneSociety.org. The shelter describes them as such: “Dorothy Burns is a quiet, mellow soul who enjoys coming over to our staff and gently laying her head on their laps for a snuggle and a pet. George Burns is about 5 months old and is very forgiving, loves other dogs, and is happy to meet anyone approaching his kennel.”

In the end, it was Officer Cyr’s kind heart that made this such a successful outcome. She clearly went above and beyond her call of duty.

dogsgeorge“It was amazing how they just sat there, like they were waiting for someone,” said the Officer, who has reached out to her dog-loving friends to assist in finding the pair a home. “I try and help out animals whenever I can, and I’m just thankful they are in good hands.”
