While everyone knows Joe Lamberti because he runs one of the best service and collision centers in town — Rye Brook Service on Boston Post Road — he’s a man of many parts. On land, he’s a specialty car aficionado with a special affection for Corvettes. On the water, his Fountain Powerboat won the World Championship in 2010 and the Nationals the year before. The Cat Killer, so named because she’s beaten every catamaran out there, holds the world record in her class — 178 mph.
Lamberti took a year off but went back out on the water this year. In October, he raced his monohull in Key West, against boats backed by a monarchy, Qatar, and by an insurance giant, Geico. “I did it in memory of 9/11 families, many of whom are longtime customers and friends,” he said. The Cat Killer came in third.
“They don’t make boats like her anymore,” Lamberti lamented. Before hauling the 50-foot Lightning to the Mamaroneck Harbor this week, he told us that may have been the last time he races her. “Someone from Trinidad has his eye on her and I think I’m ready to let her go.”
