Seven Rye wrestlers competed in the Section 1 Division 1 championship Feb. 11-12 at Westchester County Center, and three finished in the top five of their respective weight classes.
Junior CJ Luth finished second in the 160-pound weight class, winning his first three matches before finally falling in the championship match against Fox Lane junior Luke Ryan. Luth needed just 46 seconds to win his first-round match, and advanced to the championship with a 9-5 decision in the semifinals over Clarkstown North sophomore Will Roden.
Another Rye junior, Jason Gaylord, won four of his six matches in the 152-pound class. His only two losses came against Clarkstown North junior Ryan Ciardullo, first in the second round and then four matches later in the third-place match.
Junior Jack Anderson beat two seniors to reach the semifinals of the 215-pound class before losing to the eventual champion, Fox Lane senior Alexander Berisha. He bounced back to beat Clarkstown South senior Jason Ardizone in the fifth-place match.
Junior Ronan Sutter won his first-round match in the 124-pound class before dropping to the consolation bracket after a second-round loss. He then avenged sophomore teammate Ewan Jones’ tournament loss to Yorktown freshman Cooper Constantine. Sutter beat Constantine before his day ended with a loss to John Jay-Cross River freshman John Aniello.
Junior Harrison Delaney lost his first two matches in the 145-pound class, and freshman Raphael Chared Sandstrom lost his first two matches in the 101-pound class at Westchester County Center.
