Rye’s City Clerk’s Office has released voting results for three new Rye Golf Commission two-year terms to begin January 1, 2014. The Commission is comprised of nine members of Rye Golf Club who are city residents, elected by members of the club.
Newly elected commissioners are subject to approval by the Mayor and City Council.
There were seven candidates; the three winners are: Mack Cunningham, 322; John Duffy, 212; and Leon Sculti, 272. Duffy is currently the Commission’s Chairman and won a new term.
Angela Sposato fell just short of retaining her seat on the commission, with 199 votes. That leaves a single women commissioner, Pat Geoghegan, whose term expires January 2015.
Rye Golf Club has frequently been in the news due to alleged theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars by former manager, Scott Yandrasevich and the City’s subsequent $ 300,000 investigation. Also, Mayor Doug French has recently proposed adding three additional members to the Commission who would not need to be club members. The current Golf Club Commission rejects that idea.
Considering all of that, the 22 percent voter turnout, with only 490 of the eligible 2,220 electors casting votes, was light.
