Tips From Liz: Show Your Love on Galentine’s Day

This is what “Galentine’s Day” is all about: taking a moment to remind our girlfriends that we are in each other’s corner.

A dear friend came to my door recently, holding a bottle of gummy multivitamins — half-full.

“Here, you can have these,” she said, a smile breaking on her face. “Now that I have crowns on my teeth, I can’t chew them anymore. It sucks getting old!”

We laughed about aging, the ridiculousness of handing over half-used vitamins, and the unspoken joy of having a friendship so easy and honest that her “gift” wasn’t just acceptable, but felt really heartwarming!

Somehow, that simple act made me feel loved. It showed me that my friend understands me — the type of person who appreciates leftover vitamins, who can laugh at getting older, and then go for a walk.

This is what “Galentine’s Day” is all about: taking a moment to remind our girlfriends that we are in each other’s corner. We understand each other’s quirks, can laugh about things that seem scary when we’re alone (like getting older), and motivate each other to stay the course.

This Galentine’s Day, try some of these techniques to demonstrate your love for your besties:

Tell Her About it

Next time you’re together, leave an encouraging sticky note so she’ll find it after you leave. “You’re a great friend!!” or “You are totally Ryemarkable!” (or some other message) will let her know she’s appreciated.

Do Something Ordinary … Together!

Make a Target run and stroll the store together. That’s all!

Text a Laugh

Have a funny photo of the two of you? An inside joke? A meme that says it all? Text it over and brighten her day.

Or Forget Your Phone Altogether

In a world of screens, talking face to face is so refreshing. Coffee, tea, wine? Choose your liquid and enjoy!

Don’t Underestimate the Element of Surprise

A small gift — cozy socks, a coffee mug, or hand lotion — can be a lovely Galentine’s treat. Or re-gift a book (or vitamins) you’re no longer using, as long as you know she’ll love it.

In the end, the secret to Galentine’s Day is giving something that matters most: a little dose of laughter and love.
