Tips From Liz: Why I Love Summer in Rye

There’s so much to love about Rye all year, but summer? Summer is the sweet spot.

When I first moved to Rye, one of my new neighbors told me, “You’re going to love it here. It’s like being on vacation every day. There’s a wine shop at one end of our street, and the beach at the other. What could be better?”

Over the years, I’ve learned she was pretty much right. There’s so much to love about Rye all year, but summer? Summer is the sweet spot. There’s so much going on for everyone to explore.

So take advantage of the vacation vibe with some of these things:

• On Monday evenings, head to Oakland Beach where hundreds of people play beach volleyball in an organized league. Grab a bite at Barley Beach House, enjoy the people-watching, and marvel at how many people are out and about.

• Tuesday nights mean live music at Rye Town Park. I bring a chair, meet up with a friend, and get home by 9 p.m. This feel-good night includes oldies, dancing, and gorgeous sunset views of the Long Island Sound.

• Wednesday nights at the Tiki Bar bring line-dance lessons to Rye. It always looks like such a fun crowd.

• On Thursdays, I head to the Roadhouse for half-price burgers from 5 to 9 p.m. It’s fun to go with friends, but also is a casual and delicious way to win over the teens in your life.

• Sunday mornings, you’ll find me at the Farmers Market, where I not only pick up fresh produce and baked goods but have a great chat with the vendors and the neighbors I meet there.

• Of course, Rye offers some of the best walking trails around. Explore The Rye Nature Center, Marshlands, Edith Read Sanctuary, or the Jay Estate Gardens — all beautiful, all right here.

• Rent a kayak, paddle board, or pedal board at Oakland Beach and see the Long Island Sound from the water. Learn from my experience: go on a calm day!

• Tour the Square House Museum, Rye’s very own historic inn and tavern where revolutionary figures, including George Washington, stayed. Learn about historical figures who lived here and the evolution of our city.

• And, of course, Playland is open. I try to get there once a year for some old-fashioned, nostalgic fun.

Rye in the summer really does make you feel like you’re on vacation. Join me in taking advantage of the community, nature, and the special moments, whether you’re raising a glass at the beach or catching fireflies in your backyard.

It’s hard to beat summer in Rye.
