Rye High School’s Girls’ Softball Team had an unfortunate end to their season on May 16, losing 14-1 to Hendrick Hudson High School. The team ended with a record of 6-14-1 placing fifth in the Section 1 II-D League.
Despite the loss, the team had many young players who contributed significantly. Freshman Caroline Joyce led the team with a .455 batting average and a .600 on-base percentage. Joyce also ranked third in the league for batting average and first for on-base percentage.
Sophomore Tessa Labovitz followed in both categories, ranking fourth for batting average and second for on-base percentage respectively. Labovitz was a major offensive force, leading the team in both runs and RBIs.
She is followed closely in RBIs by senior captain Millie Brooks and sophomore starting pitcher Penelope Gilmore, both of whom finished with eight RBIs. Gilmore ranked second in the league for batters struck out and also hit the only homerun of Rye’s 2024 season.
Almost every game this year was a close battle, as the team played with a grit and determination that Coach Tejera hopes to carry on into next season.
“We always fought until the very end and we were in just about every game this season,” Tejera said. “There were a bunch of games that we were winning late and couldn’t hang on to win.”
Some players to keep an eye on next season are Joyce, Gilmore, Labovitz, and junior Ava Cross. “With every season, someone steps up for one reason or another and surprises,” Tejera said.
