Four members of the Rye High winter track team, as well as its 1,600-meter relay team, starred at the Section 1 Class B Championship on February 13 at The New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory.
Senior Joey Viger placed first in the 600 meter run in 1:26.3.
Matea Freidel placed second in the pole vault, clearing 8-feet, 6 inches. The RHS junior tied the school record with that vault, according to Coach James Yedowitz. Momo Yoshida placed third in the long jump by leaping 15-feet, 6 3/4-inches. John Tuttle, a senior, placed fourth in the high jump, clearing 6-feet.
Viger was joined on the 1,600-meter relay, which placed third in 3:38.9, by Jerom Theunissen, Matt Sherman, and Chris McGinnis.
Coach Yedowitz said the bright point of the winter season was the fact that nine class records were broken, eight of them by freshmen and sophomores.
Jack Ryan set three individual class records while Ryan Bird, Brandon Olivier, and Ian George each set one record. Ryan and Bird teamed with Jack Smith and Kenta Takatsu to set two new freshman/sophomore relay records.
