Tremors From Earthquake Near Sleepy Hollow Felt in Rye, Throughout Westchester County

With a magnitude of 2.3, more than 100 in Rye area say they felt light shaking from Tuesday's morning's earthquake.

A 2.3-magnitude earthquake at 10:17 a.m. Tuesday, just west of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., was felt throughout Westchester County, including Rye.

Over 100 responses on the U.S. Geological Survey website reported feeling light shaking in the Rye area. The USGS said the earthquake had a depth of 7.4 kilometers.

The Rye Police Department Instagram account said there were no reports of damage in Rye. Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said emergency services had no reports of operational issues or damage.

People reported feeling light shaking as far as western Connecticut and New York City, according to the USGS.

Tuesday’s earthquake was the second in Westchester County in the past three years. A slightly smaller, 2.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in May 2023 in the Yonkers area. That was the first earthquake reported in the county since 2018.

Rye police advised those concerned about future earthquake activity to visit the USGS website for information on staying safe.
