Two teens from the Bronx have been arrested after a daring burglary in the Rye Neck section of Mamaroneck, where a young boy pretended to sleep while witnessing the break-in.

The heist happened on Hinman Place near Boston Post Road around midnight on Jan. 14, when a 13-year-old resident woke up to two strangers in his bedroom searching for valuables. The suspects stole a laptop, two Sony PlayStations, two iPhones, an Apple Watch, and a vehicle key fob, according to village of Mamaroneck police.

They had entered the house through an unlocked door, News12 reported.

The child froze, unable to act for around 40 minutes except to pretend to sleep. While the boy was the only one to witness the thieves in action, his father and sister were also home sleeping at the time, according to Mamaroneck Police Lt. Mark Gatta. When the boy’s older brother arrived home, the child finally alerted him, and the brother called police.

Gatta estimated the value of the stolen goods at approximately $5,000. While some of the items were retrieved, they are being held as evidence, he said.

A 16-year-old male, whose name has not been released because of his age, was arrested on the night of the burglary in the Van Nest section of the Bronx. He was arraigned in village court and is facing charges of burglary, possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest. The teen has been remanded to the Woodfield Cottage Juvenile Detention Center in Valhalla, and awaits a court date.

Another suspect — a 14-year-old male — was arrested on Jan. 17, in the West Farms section of the Bronx. He was also arraigned and is facing charges of burglary, conspiracy, and possession of stolen property. He was released into his mother’s custody, pending a future court appearance.

Police determined that the suspects left on foot along Halstead Avenue before boarding a train at the Mamaroneck Metro-North station, according to the Larchmont Loop. Both arrests were made by Mamaroneck police detectives, according to Gatta.

Police would not provide the address of the burglarized home. Whether the incident was premeditated is under investigation, according to Gatta.

It is unclear if the suspects were armed.

Although News12 reported that there was a third suspect involved in the burglary, Mamaroneck police would not confirm that with the investigation still ongoing.
