In a battle of two of Section 1 Class B’s top contenders, Horace Greeley beat Rye 3-0 on Wednesday to remain unbeaten.

The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for the Garnets, dropping them to 10-2 on the season, a game and a half behind the 11-0-1 Quakers.

Thanks to senior keeper Chloe Holden and Rye’s talented back line, half of the team’s 10 wins have been shutouts, most recently a 7-0 blowout of Suffern on Monday. Wednesday’s showdown with Greeley was another defensive battle.

“Greeley had a tough defense and stopped us from getting the ball into their circle,” said Perkins. “Our defense did a great job of stepping up to make interceptions in the midfield. Cara Bartlett made a great defensive save in the second half of the game.”

Holden made seven saves to limit the Quakers’ scoring, but Rye was held scoreless for the first time this season.

With four games left in the regular season, the Garnets still have time to return to the form they showed earlier this week against Suffern. In that game, seniors Beau Whaling, Sienna Myers, and Issy Mann all scored two goals apiece. Sophomore Robyn Wilmot added a goal, and Whaling had two assists.

“It was a competitive game, Suffern’s goalie and defense were challenging,” Perkins said. “We scored our first goal early in the third quarter and then found a lot of success in the fourth quarter. All four senior captains stepped up in the last quarter.”

The Garnets return to action 5 p.m. Tuesday against Mahopac in Nugent Stadium.
