The Rye Police Department reported a residential burglary on the southern end of town over the weekend, the city’s fourth this year.

The incident occurred on Colby Avenue while the residents weren’t home sometime between Oct. 24-27, according to Rye Police Lt. Michael Anfuso. He did not know the time of day the house was hit, only that perpetrators stole jewelry from the home. Anfuso also said he hadn’t yet received an estimate of the financial worth of the jewels from the victims.

The incident wasn’t part of a confirmed pattern, but the department “just wanted to make the community aware,” Anfuso said. He also said he “believe(s) there were a few other burglaries in the Sound Shore area this weekend.”

In 2023 there were eight reported burglaries in Rye, three of them commercial, Anfuso said.

The Police Department is warning residents to make sure to secure their homes before leaving for extended periods by locking all windows and doors, and by activating house alarms. The department has reason to believe that the perpetrators may be targeting unoccupied homes.

Police issued a similar warning this summer when the department noticed an uptick of vehicle thefts in Rye, noting that under the right circumstances it can take less than a minute to steal a car.

When asked whether or not the department has any suspects for last weekend’s burglary, Anfuso told The Record the investigation is still ongoing.
