Westchester County is under a heat advisory through 8 p.m. on July 30, officials said on Monday.
The advisory, released by the National Weather Service, predicts temperatures will climb to the high 90s and low 100s now through Wednesday. Officials also warned of the potential for flash flooding, as the forecast also calls for scattered thunderstorms and rain.
Westchester residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid over-exertion, check on vulnerable neighbors, and ensure outdoor animals have plenty of shade and water. County health officials also issued a reminder to not leave children or pets in a closed car.
Playland’s pool and beach will be open an extra hour each evening through July 30 – until 7:30 p.m. – to help residents beat the heat. It’s one of four county pools to extend hours this week, Westchester officials announced on Monday.
“Our dedicated staff are going the extra mile to keep pools and beaches running smoothly during this stretch of extreme heat,” said Westchester County Parks Commissioner Kathy O’Connor. “Their commitment ensures our residents can stay safe, cool and continue to enjoy summer.”
Seniors, children, and people with chronic illness are at increased risk during heatwaves.
The state also has various designated cooling centers for people to escape the heat. In Rye, residents can cool off at the Rye Free Reading Room and the Damiano Recreation Center.
