Westchester health officials closed the beach at Coveleigh Club in Rye Wednesday due to overnight rainfall — one of nearly a dozen along the Sound Shore to shutter.
After 0.67 inches of rainfall in the area Tuesday night, the county Health Department announced in a Wednesday morning press release that the beach would be shut down for at least one day. The excessive rain could potentially cause elevated bacterial contamination from road runoff into drainage outfalls, according to the health department.
This marks the third time the health department has closed Coveleigh Beach in the past month due to potential harm from excessive rain.
Coveleigh is one of several beaches closed Wednesday, including Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Beach Club, Greentree Country Club, and Surf Club on the Sound in New Rochelle, and Harbor Island Park, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, and Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club in Mamaroneck.
