The Westchester County Health Department closed Rye’s Coveleigh Club Beach on Wednesday due to excessive rainfall.

Over the last 24 hours, 0.72 inches of rain fell, which, according to the health department, is enough to cause runoff from stormwater drains that may contaminate beach water with harmful bacteria.

Coveleigh Club, a private club located on Stuyvesant Avenue in Milton Point, is one of several beaches that the health department shuttered on Wednesday. Others ones include Harbor Island Park, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, and Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club in Mamaroneck, as well as Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Beach Club, Greentree Country Club, and Surf Club in New Rochelle.

Westchester health officials issued a similar closure three weeks ago — Coveleigh Club was included in that round as well.

Heavy rainfall can overwhelm local sewer systems, allowing polluted stormwater, sometimes containing fecal matter, to flow into the Long Island Sound.

The health department said it plans to reopen all beaches on Thursday.
