The Westchester County Department of Health has closed Coveleigh Club beach on Friday, after nearly an inch of rain fell over the past 24 hours.
Officials said runoff from roadways can increase bacteria levels in the water, prompting the precautionary closure. It marked the eighth time since the summer that the Coveleigh Clubbeach has closed, including the first instance in September.
Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Beach Club, Greentree Country Club, and Surf Club on the Sound in New Rochelle as well as Harbor Island Park, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, and Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club in Mamaroneck were also closed by the health department.
The beaches may reopen as soon as Saturday, Sept. 6, according to health officials, if no additional significant rainfall is recorded. In the meantime, swimmers are advised to stay out of the water until the county gives clearance.
