Scarf swirling, plate spinning, ball juggling, stilt walking, and clowning around were just a few of the dizzying attractions at Milton School Circus Night the evening of October 21. Fourth graders were the stars of the show, which capped off Circus Week for all grade levels.
The training begins in kindergarten when the children spend one week of their physical education time with professionals from The National Circus Project, a not-for-profit organization that offers workshops all over the country.
Under the guidance of “Renaldo” and “Pete”, instructor clowns from the Project, each student found his or her favorite activity and perfected it for the spellbound audience. This year’s theme was the Roaring Twenties, and the actors were dressed in fedoras, neckties, and pearls.
“The Circus Arts Program is a wonderful opportunity to teach and reinforce all of the skills needed to succeed in life,” said Milton physical education teacher Becky Ward. “Students learn work ethic, teamwork, discipline, concentration, tenacity, and perseverance. The challenge of doing something hard and having what it takes to stick with it is invaluable. And of course, the circus is fun!”
The performers were completely engaging and confident, and the crowd responded with whistles and cheers. This year’s third graders can step right up for next year!
