A 3-2 loss to Poly Prep on Monday ended Rye Country Day’s successful 2013 baseball campaign. The 12-7 Wildcats landed the fifth-seed in the State tournament, but were promptly bounced after a tight and hard fought game at Poly Prep.
Ace pitcher Tyler Fernandez took the loss against Poly Prep. He hung tough even without throwing his best stuff, and it seemed like the team with the fewest mistakes would win.
Matt Webster, one of the team’s best hitters, said, “Obviously we wanted to go farther in the playoffs, but we had a great season, and will only get better next year.” Head Coach Ted Lawrence notched his 200th career win against Scarsdale High on May 11.
Although the Wildcats will be losing seniors Matt Crowley, Stephen Knight, and pitcher Andrew Waite, they will return a solid core of players next season. Returnees includes first baseman and pitcher Peter Shu, Webster, and second baseman Quinn Kurzner, who belted the Wildcats’ only home run of the season.
