The Rye Country Day girls’ soccer team was ranked No. 1 in the NYAISSA tournament and came one penalty kick away from making it to the finals, before falling 3-2 to Columbia Prep on Monday.
In the quarterfinal game, at home against Dalton November 4, the Wildcats started out slowly, but progressively gained control of the game. Sammy Friedwald scored the first goal on an amazing shot from the left side of the field. Liz Judd scored the second goal on a cross from Sophie Brown.
Rye took a 2-0 lead into the second half and Judd scored again to seal the deal. Dalton ultimately scored on a penalty kick, but an exuberant Rye Country Day team headed to the semis with a 3-1 win.
Coach Alin Andrei called senior captain Judd the player of the game. “She stepped forward and encouraged all the other girls to play well,” he said.
In the State semi-final game, Rye Country Day came out strong, creating many scoring opportunities — but they were unable to get the ball past Columbia Prep’s phenomenal keeper.
Despite the loss, The Wildcats had a tremendous season, finishing 15-3-1.
