Rye Country Day won a lopsided field hockey game against Holy Child September 13, one in which the 6-1 score accurately reflected overall play.
The Wildcats dominated the entire game, while Holy Child struggled to maintain possession of the ball.
In the first half, RCDS’s Mariana Yana Lee scored just shy of the three-minute mark off a short corner by Charlotte Cooper. Emily Duarte made it a 2-0 game less than a minute later, and Sophie Grayer scored RCDS’s third goal 12 minutes into the game. Junior Victoria Rapillo put Holy Child on the scoreboard on an assist by Adare Kennedy, a little over a minute after RCDS scored its third goal. Senior tri-captain Eve Wulf made it a 4-1 game shortly before the end of the first half.
Early in the second half, Emily Duarte scored two more goals for the Wildcats including one assisted by senior tri-captain Clare McClintock as Holy Child continued to struggle.
“We maintained our intensity the entire game and our captains really set a fine example,’’ said Coach Georgette Summers of her RCDS winners. Summers said the team played especially well given the fact it lost seven starters to graduation last year.
Annie Grayer, Clare McClintock, and Wulf were recognized by the coaches for their talent, spirit, and positive energy. Also praised were Duarte, who scored three goals, and goalie Emma Santucci of RCDS. Goalie Maggie Evans had 15 saves for Holy Child
Holy Child Coach Barbara Lorys said that while she was disappointed with the loss, she was impressed by her team’s quality of play. “I had to keep reminding myself that it was our first game of the season,” Lorys said. “We have a young, inexperienced team.”
“It’s early in the season and we are still trying to figure out our placement and find our groove,” Lorys said. “We have a lot of work to do, but I know we can do it.”
