Each year, in early March, we eagerly adjust our clocks for the beginning of daylight saving time. And each year, as the calendar turns to May, the tulips bloom, the days are gloriously long, and the Rye boys lacrosse team establishes itself as a Section 1 championship contender.
2026 is no different.
The Garnets’ 16-6 dismantling of Scarsdale last Thursday was the sixth win in their past seven games. All three losses this season for Rye (8-3) came outside of Section 1, against teams that happen to be among the best in the Northeast. Once again, this Garnet team is loaded.
Against Scarsdale (5-5), the Garnets were mostly unimpeded on offense and nearly impenetrable on defense. Sophomore Will Niejadlik racked up five goals and four assists. Senior Henry Shoemaker and junior Charlie Brady each logged hat tricks. Senior Thomas Goldszer scored twice with an assist, and the Garnets got one goal apiece from senior Carson Miller and juniors Sam Scully and Henry Gilroy.
Sophomore goalie Sam LaMonte played terrific in a game that was decided by the end of the first quarter, combining with freshman Quinn McGill to make 11 saves.
And just when you thought it was nearly time to send Shoemaker a fare-thee-well card, say hello to his freshman brother, Johnny, who displayed typical family athletic aplomb, winning 11 face-offs.
Next up is a game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Port Washington on Long Island.
