The young Rye boys tennis team is getting its feet wet in more ways than one. The Garnets, who have just three upperclassmen on the varsity roster, were in the process of playing a third match in three days on April 10 before rain cut the competition short.
The team entered spring break with two wins, one loss, and a postponement against Horace Greeley, which is scheduled to be completed May 5. Rye lost to Scarsdale 6-1 on April 8, then quickly bounced back for a 6-1 win over Mamaroneck on April 9.
“I’m really enjoying this group of players,” said Rye coach Sue Dickson. “They are eager to develop their games and have a good competitive spirit; they even love practice. It’s a very compatible group and they are easy-going and very coachable.”
All three of Rye’s singles competitors won matches against Mamaroneck. Senior Alex Gordon won 7-5, 6-1; his brother, junior Luke Gordon won 6-4, 6-2; and eighth-grader Grant Lobo won when his opponent withdrew.
The top three doubles teams all won as well. Sophomores Lou Kim-Reuter and Filip Glitterstam won 6-0, 6-2; freshman Timothy Morell and his brother, eighth-grader Xavier Morell won 6-2, 4-6, (10-8); and sophomores Marcos Becker and Tayga Vural won in two sets.
“We are a young team with a lot of potential,” Dickson said. “Aside from the weather, every day has been a joy.”
In addition to the postponement against Horace Greeley, weather also had an effect on Rye’s match against Scarsdale. With strong winds and near-freezing windchills, Lobo was the only Garnet to pick up a win, while both Gordons and the Kim-Reuter/Glitterstam doubles team all lost close matches on tiebreakers.
Rye’s next competition is April 22 against John Jay.
