Young Garnets Boys Golf Team Swinging for Lofty Goals

Top 20 sectional tournament finishers, freshman Ryan Mascali and sophomore Derek Bisceglia, return alongside seniors Nate Allison and Ben Hammer.
Boys golfer takes a swing.

Rye boys golf coach Pat Romano laid out three clear goals for his team entering the season: Win the league title; qualify as many kids as possible for sectionals, and win the team sectionals championship, currently held by Scarsdale.

“With the talent I’ve seen so far, I think these goals are very achievable,” Romano said. “We are a very young and talented team. Our expectations are high for the next several years. A big reason for this is the local clubs in the area and PGA professionals who are teaching and working with these talented junior players.”

That talent was evident last season when the Garnets had a 14-2 record and qualified eight individuals for sectional play. This year’s team is much younger but still possesses postseason experience.

Freshman Ryan Mascali and sophomore Derek Bisceglia both finished in the top 20 in last year’s sectional tournament, and another freshman, Graham Erickson, just missed the top 20 cut line. That young trio, along with another freshman, Ryker Kevorkian, will look to contribute low scores regularly for a Garnets team that still has a dose of upper-class leadership in seniors Nate Allison and Ben Hammer.
