A New Era Begins for Westchester

 

Election Day 2020 represents a milestone, as longtime Democratic representatives of the 16^th and 17^th Congressional Districts, Eliot Engel and Nita Lowey, were replaced by a new generation of Black, Democratic office holders. Engel, Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, was defeated in the primary by Jamaal Bowman. Lowey, the Appropriations Committee Chair, retired, and Mondaire Jones was elected to her seat.

 

In New York State’s 16^th C.D., Bowman defeated Conservative Patrick McManus by a vote of 160,289 to 32,231. In a peculiar twist in the race, there were 42,798 blank ballots, 18 percent of the total.

 

In the 17^th C.D., Jones had 134,845 votes, against her Republican challenger, Maureen McArdle-Schulman, who received 98,634 votes.

 

Incumbent State Senator Shelley Mayer (D) overcame a challenge by Republican/Conservative Liviu Saimovici in the 37^th District, winning 62,345 to 39,915.

 

In an uncontested election in the 91^st A.D., incumbent Assemblyman Steve Otis won reelection with 29,172 votes.
