A Small House, With a Long History of Big People

On May 8, many of Rye’s current and past civic leaders convened at the Square House, the town’s historic Village Hall, to give wholehearted and non-partisan thanks to those who serve Rye.

Mayor Josh Cohn said it was a pleasure to serve as official greeter in a house where some of the founders of our republic came through. He was joined by the other members of the City Council, as well as four former mayors – Ted Dunn, Steve Otis, Doug French, and Joe Sack.

In his remarks, Doug French, reminded the audience that, although they were inside a colonial-era house, that “we’re still making history”, noting that Rye was the first to pass a no-plastic-bag law, before New York State followed our lead.

Councilwoman Danielle Tagger-Epstein noted one thing that doesn’t get enough credit – “the City Charter our road map. It took three years to write a charter before we became a City.”

For Councilwoman Sara Goddard seeing the culture of volunteerism is overwhelming. “You can’t help but realize how much people give and how much the City benefits,” she remarked.

City Manager Marcus Serrano was on hand to introduce many of the City Staff who were praised throughout the evening for their professionalism and dedication.

And, then it was on to City Hall and back to the nitty-gritty of doing the business of the City: a review of the new street paving plan.
