Byram Hills Defeats Youthful Garnets

Rye’s wrestling team this year has a large squad of 40 athletes. It’s a young squad that, according to freshman Latham Billingsley, “has a lot of potential because we have a lot of underclassmen who are willing to put the work in.

Another freshman, Giovanni Cavatoni, enjoys “the time I spend with my fellow wrestlers who love to come in every day and compete.” Conor Galligan added, “We leave it all on the mat. Coach Jenson does a great job of disciplining us during practice and before every match.”

In their January 14 matchup against Byram Hills, Rye’s Madoc DiGiulio had a hard-fought battle in which he pinned his opponent in the 120-pound weight class. His teammate, Cian Keegan, put it all on the mat in the 140-pound weight class, lasting three periods and securing another satisfying victory for Rye.

Despite two great individual efforts, the Garnets were down 24-15 to the Bobcats.

Tommy DeCaro was dominant in his 160-pound weight class performance, getting a pin within one period of his match. Grant Howard, was all over the mat for the Garnets, consistently applying pressure on his opponent despite a Byram decision, extending its lead to 39-21.

Byram then won the 195-, 220-, and 285-pound weight classes to defeat Rye 63-21. In exhibition matches, Rye won by pins for the first three matches and lost the last two.

The Garnets were set to face the Eastchester Eagles at home post-press time, January 16.
