Come Out and Celebrate the RHS Class of 2020

I certainly concur with Karen Butler in her piece entitled “Rye Loves a Parade”. In my time as superintendent of the Rye City School District I have had the honor of participating in multiple parades where the community involvement and excitement is wonderful. There has been so much loss this spring as communities grapple with the impact of Covid-19. The incredible loss of life and impact of illness will be felt long into the future. The loss of community events, traditions, and pastimes will also stay with many.

The Rye High School graduating class of 2020 has missed out on so many milestone events that typify senior year in high school. I wish I could halt the virus and welcome the seniors back into Rye High School to celebrate their incredible accomplishments in our longstanding traditional ways.

While we may have lost our parades this spring, the Rye community can join together in an alternative event designed to celebrate the Rye High School Class of 2020 and their families. On May 31 at 2 p.m., the Class of 2020 Graduation Caravan will travel throughout the city and give the community a chance to step outside, cheer together, and send good wishes of congratulations to a wonderful group of students and their families. While it may not be a parade, it is a way for our community to join together and raise our collective voices in celebration.
