Dining In

Grab ‘n Go Options

By Karen Schulz

My dad felt an unfamiliar and uncomfortable pain in his chest right before Memorial Day weekend. The last place he wanted to be was in a hospital, but this pain was different. Luckily, he went to the ER, where he was quickly scheduled for open-heart surgery. He has now been home for a month recovering under the watchful eye of my mom, the greatest nurse ever, and is doing well. His nickname is “Ox”, so I expected nothing less.

When I showed up, unannounced, to visit my mom while she was alone all those days unable to visit my dad in the hospital, I found her in the kitchen — we’re a family that loves food and cooking — with all the windows open to the spring breeze, blasting Andrea Bocelli and making Ina Garten’s lentil soup. It’s a labor-intensive recipe but one she’d always wanted to try, and, since she found herself with plenty of time, she gave it a whirl. I knew, however, that when my dad returned home, her caregiving responsibilities would give her little time to cook.

Question was, how could I help?

The morning I learned my father was going to be released from the hospital, I went straight to June & Ho. Even though I would have loved to cook for my parents, this was definitely a time to take advantage of all the delicious, fresh, high-quality, and nutritious options available in our small town. Never is nutrition more important than after major surgery or a serious illness to speed the healing process.

I loaded up my cart at June & Ho with smoked salmon tartare, chicken potpies, freekah salad with cauliflower and pomegranate seeds, Asian rice noodles with fresh vegetables, curry chicken salad, beet salad, and lots more.

I am sure you have a favorite something from every corner of the town. Below are some of my go-to grab ‘n go favorites.
