Edward Chin

Edward Gim Ho Chin, a leading aviation attorney, died July 11, 2017. The longtime Rye resident was 69.

Born in Hong Kong on September 9, 1947 he was the son of Harry Shue King Chin and Mary Lo Chin.

After graduating from Xavier High School in 1965, he went on to New York University, from which he received both a B.E. and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering. In 1977, he graduated cum laude from Fordham University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review. Mr. Chin was also a member of Tau Beta Pi (the national engineering honor society), Eta Kappa Nu (the national electrical engineering honor society), and a recipient of NYU’s Founder’s Day Award. 

Starting off as a research engineer, he had six U.S. patents in navigation, guidance, and landing systems.

He began his legal career at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, became a partner at Hertzog, Calamari & Gleason in 1984, and was a partner at Winston & Strawn LLP from 1999-2009. For over a decade, he was listed in Euromoney’s Guide to the World’s Leading Aviation Lawyers.

In addition to being an avid golfer, he was also a tai chi master.

At a Mass in celebration of his life, July 15 at Church of the Resurrection, his family praised him for “being the greatest husband, father, brother, and son-in-law. We will hold you in our hearts forever.”

In addition to his wife, Mr. Chin is survived by is survived by his sons, Arthur Chin of Rye and Benjamin Chin (Maria Pia) of Ossining; his sister, Dolores Kung Jacob; and his mother-in-law, Constance Fung. 

Donations in Edward Chin’s memory may be made to the Asian American Law Fund of NY, Fordham University School of Law, or the Lustgarten Foundation.
