Fighting Hunger Together

Rye YMCA Togetherhood Committee members teamed up with summer camp families and donated 85 grocery bags filled with non-perishable food items during a food drive last month for Bread of Life.

Last month’s project was the Rye Y’s third food drive for Bread of Life. This year, the Togetherhood Committee added a service component: twelve children and adults helped stock the shelves at the Rye-based food pantry on the second day of the drive.

“We were so gratified by the generosity of Rye Y members and camp families” commented Vanessa Mayo, a Togetherhood Committee member who chaired the project. “Hunger touches more people than we know in the Sound Shore. Coming together to donate food makes a real difference for our neighbors who are struggling to feed their families.”

Bread of Life meets the urgent food needs of underfunded and undersupplied pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens throughout southern Westchester County. They serve 400 families every week at their Rye food pantry alone and thousands more at other facilities.

Togetherhood is a YMCA social responsibility initiative that engages volunteers of all ages in community service projects.

For the next Togetherhood project, Saturday, September 15, volunteers will participate in International Coastal Clean-up Day at Edith Read Sanctuary. Contact Denise Woodin at denise@ryeymca.org or 967-6363, ext. 101 for details.
