Garnets’ Make It A Goal-Fest

By Grace Macdonald

Saturday April 27 marked G-Fest, an all-day annual celebration of Rye High School sports. G-Fest allows Rye teams, both Varsity and JV, to play home games at Nugent Stadium with supported by enormous school spirit and the added feature of food trucks. The most anticipated game of G-Fest is always the night game under the lights, which happened to be Rye Girls’ Lacrosse versus Scarsdale. And the team stepped up to the occasion and had an excellent game in front of the home crowd.

From the first play of the game, Rye dominated the Raiders. Within two minutes of the initial whistle, Rye had already found the net. In fact, a combination of the Garnet’s superior offense and defense resulted in Rye making six goals before Scarsdale would score their first. At the end of the first half, Rye was up with a very comfortable lead of 9-1.

In the second half, Rye lost its momentum, and it seemed as though Scarsdale had the opportunity to make a comeback. However, Rye managed to hold up and prevent Scarsdale from having too many chances at scoring. The final score was 16-8, a huge win for the home team and G-Fest fans.

Besides Rye getting a solid win, another highlight of the game was Amelia Cunningham making her 400th save as goalie. The entire night went very well for the team, thanks to the girls’ strong performance. Coach Dennis Hurlie was very pleased with the final results of the game. He said, “We have a tough stretch of games up ahead, but this is going to help us get ready and keep getting better as we prepare for playoffs.”
