“Hamlet” Discussion at Library March 12

To Attend… or Not to Attend?

Last spring, the Rye Free Reading Room and Allen Clark launched a new series of literary discussions open to the public, led by Dr. Mark Schenker, Sr. Associate Dean at Yale College and Dean of Academic Affairs. Based on the great interest in those three talks about Shakespeare’s King Henry plays, Dr. Schenker has been invited back to discuss “Hamlet” on Sunday, March 12.

Dr. Schenker has lectured throughout Fairfield and Westchester counties on Shakespeare’s tragedies and comedies. He provides insights into the inner workings of the individual plays and an overview, in this case of the qualities of tragedy, as well as Shakespeare’s special craft. Following his discussion, Dr. Schenker will invite questions from the audience.

The event will be held in the library’s Community Meeting Room starting at 4:30 p.m. and ending at 5:45 p.m. Refreshments and cheeses will be available during and afterwards. A voluntary donation to the Rye Free Reading Room will be requested, most likely between $10 and $15 depending on the number of people attending. Reservations should be made at amcrye@gmail.com or 967-6335.

Two additional discussions with Dr. Schenker are scheduled: Ford Maddox Ford’s “The Good Soldier,” the best-selling novel of World War I, on Sunday, April 23, and selected Thomas Hardy poems on Sunday, May 21.
