Harrison Market to Check Out

The Harrison Market, a convenient shopping destination for many Rye residents, is expected to shut down in the next few weeks. No replacement has been announced for the store at 355 Halstead Ave. in Harrison.

The 12,018 square-foot supermarket occupies nearly half of the retail space at Harrison Shopping Square, according to a property description from Regency Centers, the complex’s owner. The space is listed by Regency as “available soon.” Among the center’s nine other retail tenants: Aria Sushi, Empire Bagels, Taku Chinese Kitchen, Harrison Bake Shop, and Friendly Spirits Wine & Liquor.

The Harrison Market is a member of the Key Food Cooperative, which provides retail support and other services to independently owned food retailers.

On a recent visit, large empty spots on store shelves signaled that The Harrison Market was winding down operations. The Harrison Market owner, Phillip Drogin, did not return calls for comment.

The space has been home to many supermarkets over the years. Harrison Food City closed its doors in 2012 after a 25-year run and was replaced by Food Emporium, which became an A&P until that company went bankrupt in 2015.

Harrison Shopping Square is one of 482 centers with over 61 million square feet of retail space owned by the NASDAQ-traded Regency Centers, according to its website. With a market value of approximately $11 billion, it is the largest real estate investment trust focused on grocery-anchored shopping centers.
