Public Safety Commissioner Michael Kopy and the Rye Police Department are asking for residents’ cooperation in putting an end to the wave of vehicle thefts in Rye.

Since January 1, 2020, Rye has had 71 vehicles stolen from residents’ driveways. Every vehicle was left unlocked, with the keys left inside. In addition to the stolen vehicles, Rye had 55 vehicles entered and rummaged with property stolen; again, all unlocked vehicles. Eleven of those vehicles were stolen in the past two months.

Rye’s stolen vehicles have been used to commit crimes in other jurisdictions. They have been recovered from Hartford, Connecticut to Newark, New Jersey. The assailants in the stolen car cases have proven they will not stop when a traffic stop is initiated by officers. Instead, they will engage in high-speed pursuits with little regard for public safety. Commissioner Kopy and RPD are asking the public for their assistance in protecting your property and avoiding its use in other criminal activity:

• Lock your car doors and remove the key or fob from your vehicle.
