Holy Child Swimming Gryphons Make a Big Splash This Season

By Melanie Cane

After losing their season opener to league winner Greenwich Academy, the Holy Child Swim team got their strokes together and won ten meets in a row.

The outcome of their final meet, against Sacred Heart, determined who finished second in the league. The tension was heightened because some of the freshman swimmers were on a ski trip and would miss the meet.

Not only did the Gryphons beat the Tigers 48-45, they also set two records. The 400 Freestyle relay team — Juliana Rivera, Lizzy Ford, Willa Sarcone, and Kate Hoesterey — set a pool record of 3:54.19. Willa Sarcone set a new school record in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:02.37.

Maggie Scala won the 100 Breaststroke. Rivera came in first in both the 200 and 500 Freestyle, and Hoesterey both the 50 and 100 Freestyle.

Coach Art Tiedemann was beaming. “All the swimmers did great. It was a terrific team effort and an outstanding meet.”

Holy Child has two post-season championship meets in the coming weeks: The Bud Erich Invitational Meet at Hopkins School February 24 will determine the league championship, and the New England Championships are March 3.
