Augustus John Steinthal Jr., of Rye Brook, N.Y., passed away peacefully on December 21, 2023, at the age of 87. A man of honor, a pillar of his community, and a cherished soul, he leaves a wonderful legacy.
Born on December 15, 1936, in New York, N.Y., Jack, as he was known, attended Columbia University and after earning his MBA went on to a successful career at the helm of Jones Instrument Company, a manufacturing business in Stamford, Conn., which he ran with a steady hand.
His leadership extended beyond his business. He served as president of Westchester Country Club, where he was a respected figure known for his even temperament and judgment. He also served on the Rye Brook Board of Education.
An avid reader and golfer, he was also a strong bridge player and wore the crown multiple times at the family Hearts Tournaments.
He was a lifelong parishioner at Resurrection Church and a member the Knights of Malta.
“He was a beacon of light for all who were lucky enough to know him,” said his family. “He will be remembered for his integrity, generous spirit, and unwavering reliability.”
His role as a father and grandfather was one that he held in the highest regard, instilling in his family the values of faith, education, integrity, hard work, and compassion. All his grandchildren can attest to the active role he played in their lives as coach, friend, and role model. He passed on his love of games, as well as his fair play and honesty.
In addition to his beloved wife of 62 years, Jane Gillespie Steinthal, he is survived by his sisters, Sandra Powell (Robert) and Marge Neprud; his daughter, Mary Jane Kent (Robert), and his sons, John, James (Sally), Thomas (Nicole), and David (Jennifer);16 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
Donations in Jack Steinthal’s memory may be made to The Carver Center in Port Chester or St. Vincent’s Hospital in Harrison.
