John Loflin

John J. Loflin, 91, died peacefully at Talbot Hospice House in Easton, Md., on October 11, 2018. Born in Enterprise, Alabama, he spent his early years there and in Panama City, Florida, on the Gulf Coast, where he developed a lifelong love of boats, swimming, fishing, and the ocean. He moved with his parents in the late 1930s to Arlington, Virginia.

Upon graduation from Washington-Lee High School, he immediately entered the U.S. Air Force. In 1951 he received a B.A. in Government from the University of Virginia’s College of Arts & Sciences and graduated from Columbia University Law School in 1955. He lived in Rye, New York, for 35 years and retired to Easton with his wife, Ann, in 1994. In New York City he worked for Kelley Drye, the City of New York during the John Lindsay administration, and Lord Day & Lord, Barrett Smith as a litigation attorney, arguing many cases in New York, New Jersey, and other state and federal courts, and two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. His work involved travel around the world — Switzerland, England, Sweden, Greece, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Japan.

Mr. Loflin enjoyed sailing and tennis, travel, awful puns, and celebrating with family and friends.

He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, fairness, and his enthusiasm for conversation and closeness, and will be missed as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Bonnie Green Loflin, and one grandchild, Michelle Cross. He is survived by his wife, Ann Henry Loflin; his brother-in-law, Richard Henry; his children, Karen (Jeff), Robert (Michele), Janet (Gerald), Christine, Gail (Steven); and eleven grandchildren.

A service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m. at Christ Church, St Michaels, Maryland, with interment at a later date at Christ’s Church in Rye.
