Memorial Day Ceremonies

 

The City of Rye will carry on a long tradition of honoring its war dead on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.

 

Rye American Legion Post 128 and the Auxiliary are sponsoring the annual parade, which begins at the Rye train station at 9:30 a.m. and proceeds along Purchase Street to the Village Green for ceremonies immediately following at 10 a.m.

 

The public is invited to enjoy music, marchers, trucks, and cars. The Rye Historical Society will provide horses and riders. Unique antique cars will also travel the parade route.

 

American Legion Post 128 Commander Fred de Barros will lead the formal ceremony on the Village Green. Mayor Josh Cohn and County Executive George Latimer will greet guests. The keynote speaker is Gulf War veteran Terry McCartney.

 

The annual Rye American Legion Post 128 Americanism Award will be presented to Sally Rogol, superintendent of Rye Recreation.

 

The names of those from Rye who fought and perished in the wars of the 20^th century will be read aloud.

 

The John M. Kingery Memorial Day Essay Contest Awards will be presented to three Rye High School students. The program will also include recognition of Rye Eagle Scouts and Girl Scouts.

 

Robin Latimer, president of the American Legion Auxiliary, will sing the National Anthem and “God Bless America”, and be accompanied by students from Milton School.

 

Prior to the parade, members of the Rye Fire Department will conduct a brief ceremony and lay flowers at the monument in the circle at Milton Road and Grace Church Street at 8:15 a.m. The monument honors Rye firefighters who served their nation.

 

 

Terry McCartney was born in Hawaii to parents who both served in the United States Air Force, and he his four siblings grew up on military bases across the country.

After graduating from the Virginia Military Institute in 1986, he was commissioned a 2^nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps on the same day. McCartney served on active duty as an infantry officer from 1986 to 1991, including numerous overseas deployments in command of infantry units and as a general’s aide-de-camp at Headquarters Marine Corps in Washington, D.C. during Operation Desert Storm.

 

In 1991, he left active duty to attend law school but continued to serve in the Marine Corps Reserves until 1997. He was honorably discharged holding the rank of Major.

An accomplished trial lawyer, McCartney started a new law firm last year, McCartney Stucky LLC, which has offices in Rye and in Kansas City, Missouri.

He has been married for 32 years to his college sweetheart, Julia Rheingold, who grew up in Rye. They have two adult sons, Jack and Daniel.

An active member of the Rye community, McCartney served on the Rye City Council from 2013 to 2017 and currently serves on the Rye Golf Club Commission. He has been a member of Rye American Legion Post 128 since 2002 and has been honored to host a Memorial Day Golf Tournament for the past several years at Rye Golf Club to raise money to support Post 128’s scholarship and social programs.

 

This is the 100^th anniversary of Rye Post 128, which was chartered on July 16, 1919.
